 - The Divine Lunar Mansions :

Traditionally the Nakshatra of Moonis computed for native's mental strengths, and calculation of planetary periods or dasa. Each Nakshatra is divided into four equal segments known as charan or pad. Nakshatra contain and important place in Match Making, Mahurata, Panchanga and Prasana affairs.

In Indian classical Hindu scriptures like Mahabharata, the creation of the nakshatras is attributed to Daksha

We have 27 Nakshatras, or in normal language, 27 divisions of sky. The moon, passes through during its monthly cycle, as used in Hindu Astronomy or Religion. The Moon have 27 wifes or queens, are called 27 Nakshatra. Moon like her queen Rohini very much. Moon give wonderful results in few Nakshatras. Like Rohini, Pushya etc.
The significance  of Nakshatras is used in Vedic Astrology for  predictions and further analysis. Janamanakshtra is the Nakshatra in which the  Moon is placed at the time of birth. The Nakshatra gives an insights to one's thought process.
The ancient seers added another sub divisional system of breaking down the zodiac into 27 Nakshatras or star constellations. Each nakshatra has a span of 13 degrees and 20 minutes. After that each nakshatra was further subdivided into 4 Padas, or quarters, of 3 degrees and 20 minutes. Hence the first zodiac sign Aries, which has 30 degrees, contains the entire 4 padas (13:20') of the 1st star constellation Ashwini, the entire 4 padas (13:20') of the 2nd star constellation Bharani and the 1st pada (3:20') of the third star constellation Krittika. So each rasi contains total 9 padas. These nakshatras belong to three main groups: Deva or divine, Manusha or human and Rakshasa or Demonic. Hence while studying the effects of a planet placed in Aries, it is also studied in which nakshatra it is placed and in which pada of that nakshatra it is placed. This system of analysis exists only in Indian astrology.

According to ancient pandits of jyotisha these 27 Nakshatras in the space represent potentiality and force of nature while a planet glides within the range of any Nakshatras. The Nakshatra in which the moon is situated at the time of birth is called Janam Nakshatra. The Janam Nakshatra is calculated by founding the longitude of moon present in a particular sign at the time of birth. For example, if the Moon is in the Sign capricorn with longitude 6 - 26 degree at the time of birth, than the janam Nakshatra would be a 3rd quarter of Uttarashadha. The 27 Nakshatras can be put into 9 groups of 3 Nakshatras each, each group of Nakshatras being ruled by a particular planet. The main dasa or maha dasa at birth may be determined by the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at the time of birth.
